These window tint shades are expressed in percentages. The percentage you pick determines how much light and heat gets through your windows as well as the look and feel of your car.

What Does a Window Tint Percentage Mean?
When you see a tint film labeled 5%, 15%, or 35%, those numbers refer to Visible Light Transmission (VLT) or how much visible light is allowed to pass through your window glass and film combined.
- 5% means only 5% of visible light gets through — that’s a dark car tint often called “limo tint.”
- 35 percent tint allows 35% of light to pass giving you a balance between shade and visibility. It’s also the legal limit for front doors in Ontario.
- 70% tint looks almost clear but still offers UV and heat protection.
To put it simply, the lower the percentage, the less light is allowed through.
Common Tint Levels And What They Do
Here’s a quick breakdown of typical window tint percentages and what they’re best suited for:
5% Window Tint (Very Dark)
5% window tint is the darkest shade of auto window tint. The ultimate in privacy, it’s also the tint you see on limousines. 5 limo tint is only legal on rear windows and the rear windshield in Ontario.
15%–20% Auto Tint (Dark)
Less dramatic than the pitch-black limo tint, this shade still gives you plenty of privacy. This film is also used to match the factory smoke glass on the back of most SUV’s and trucks.
30%–35% (Medium)
The sweet spot for most drivers. A 30 percent tint reduces glare and heat, looks sophisticated, and still keeps your visibility clear.
50%–70% (Light)
70% window tint is common for people who prefer to have the look of no tint, but still want the protection and benefits it offers. It is the lightest shade of tint and is barely noticeable. However, it does still give you 99% UV protection, reduced heat, and less glare.
