What Are the Benefits Of Car Paint Protection Film?

Protect Your Car

No one likes a dinged up, scratched vehicle and Car Paint Protection Film (PPF) is one of the best ways to prevent that from happening. Even simple everyday driving can be unkind to your paint job with road debris, stone chips, salt, bugs, and a whole lot more waiting to give your vehicle its first scratch.

As expert PPF installers, we believe that paint protection film is worth the investment for many vehicle owners, and we’ve explained why below.

What Does Paint Protection Film Actually Do?

PPF acts as a barrier between your paint and the hazards it encounters from the road and the elements, including damaging UV rays.  Automotive paint protection film works by absorbing impacts, protecting your paint from damage.

How Does Paint Protection Film Work?

Understanding how PPF works allows you to truly appreciate the benefits of PPF. Made from high-quality polyurethane, vehicular PPF typically has a multi-layered structure that absorbs the energy from impacts, resists scuffs, and actually recovers from minor damage (more on this later!).

  • Adhesive Layer: This layer isn’t often given the importance it deserves. It’s the sticky bottom layer that keeps the PPF firmly secured to your vehicle without damaging the original paint.
  • TPU Core Layer: Made of thermoplastic polyurethane, this is the layer that bears the brunt of impacts from debris.
  • Top Coat: Depending on the type of PPF you choose, this layer may be hydrophobic (water-repellent) as well as self-healing.

High-quality car protection films like the XPEL Ultimate Plus start at 8 mil thickness (ideal for regular use) and go up to 23 mil for vehicles that see some rough terrain.

How Does PPF Self Heal?

It may sound like tech from science fiction, but many high-quality paint protection films, like XPEL Ultimate Plus and Stealth, repair themselves. When the film suffers from mild damage like scratches, light key marks, or swirl marks, the heat from the sun or warm water makes scratches disappear as the coating morphs back into its original form.

Will PPF Keep My Car Looking New?

Maintaining that fresh new look once your car leaves a dealership or paint shop isn’t easy. PPF preserves that look, making it particularly valuable on high-end, performance or enthusiast vehicles where keeping the original paintwork pristine is a priority.

PPF also makes keeping your vehicle looking clean so much easier. Depending on the type of film, it can prevent water spots and mineral deposits from building up as water simply rolls off the film.

Is Paint Protection Film Worth The Cost For My Vehicle?

PPF costs money, but then again, so does a new paint job. Paint protection film is typically worth it for your car if:

  • It sees regular use.

OR

  • It’s a luxury, sports, or performance vehicle.

PPF is not worth it if:

  • If you have a vehicle that is already heavily damaged.
  • You’re leasing a vehicle.

If finances are a concern, you can choose to partially cover your vehicle ensuring that parts that bear most of the brunt when you’re on the road are protected.

XPEL Colour

Certain paint protection films from XPEL come in a variety of colours, so you can glam up your vehicle with a brand-new colour or finish without having to shell out for a brand-new paint job plus PPF or wrap plus PPF.

PPF Installation Matters

The quality of the film is only part of the equation; the quality of installation matters too. Poorly installed PPF can have visible edges, bubbles, lifting or an uneven finish.

MKT Graphics offers experienced technicians who give your vehicle the TLC it deserves right from preparing it for PPF installation to finishing the job so it’s road ready when you pick it up. Our team is always happy to help you choose the right paint protection film for your needs.
